Here are the crucial numbers from The Julius Review, which assessed the size and contribution of the UK's Public Services Industry.

£79BN.  The revenue generated by the UK public services industry (PSI) during 2007/2008, making it the second largest in the world.  The US largest.

£24.2BN.  The amount spent on health, the largest PSI sector, followed by social protection (£17.9bn), defence (£10.1bn) and education (£7.3bn).

£9BN.  The difference between the value added of PSI (£45bn) and the hotels and restaurant sector (£36bn), followed by electricity, gas and water supply (£32bn) and communication (£28bn)

8.1%.  The percentage by which the education sector grew over the last twelve years, followed by environmental protection (7.9%) and health (7%).

1.2Million.  The number of people employed to deliver public services in the UK

10-30%.  The typical cost of saving provided by competitive tendering, including when an in-house team is successful.
